Demands revision in pension ceilings
Hyderabad, April 3, 2006
Nearly 20,000 employees of State Bank of India (SBI) working in 850 branches across the State went on an indefinite strike on Monday demanding settlement of long pending issue of revised pension ceilings, among others. The employees gathered in front of their offices in Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Tirupati and Hyderabad and staged demonstrations. They raised slogans demanding revision of pension, industry level commutation/family pension, revised pension ceiling and family pensioners. The Deputy General Secretary of State Bank of India Staff Union, Hyderabad Circle N.Radhakrishnan said that the strike was a total success. The union is affiliated to the All India State Bank of India Staff Federation.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court restrained the SBI employees staging dharnas or protest rallies within 500 meters of the bank's headquarters and its branches across the country. Acting on a Public interest litigation petition filed by an advocate, a Division Bench comprising Justice MK Sharma and Reva Khetrapal passed the interim order. The Bench also issued a notice to the Union Government seeking reply from it as to why the demands of the employees were not being met.
