He is believed to be abducted on Friday when moving in his car with his driver on the Kabul-Kandahar Highway without any security. A senior official of the MEA said in Hyderabad that security is provided to Indian Engineers working in Afghanistan especially in Zabul province, which is the most problematic one and is a Taliban stronghold. Apart from local security, India has sent over 200 commandos of the ITBP to ensure proximate security of the Indians working on various projects there in the light of previous incidents. In New Delhi, Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran said that the Indian Government was in touch with the Afghanistan authorities for the safe release of Suryanarayana.

The Talibans have set a 24-hour deadline for all the Indians companies to pull out of Afghanistan failing which they will kill him. The dead line expires by 7.30 on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Indian embassy in Afghanistan sought the help of the Afghan Government, the US-led multinational force. The Union Government formed a high-level team of officials to go to Afghanistan and assist in efforts to secure the release of Suryanarayana. Previously, one Bharat Kumar, working with a Turkish company was killed in a bomb blast in February 2006, BRO Jawan MR Kutty was abducted and killed in January 2006,Murali and Varadaiah of Nellore were kidnapped and freed by Taliban after 13 days in December 6, 2003.

The family members of Suryanarayana tried to meet Chief Minister Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy for asking him to pressurize the Central Government for safe release but the officials of the CMO turned down the appoint and have given the appointment for Sunday. They however arranged a car for the family members to return to home but was declined. The family members returned back home in an autos.

The family members of Suryanarayana Rao were in a sad state when the news reached them. They wept before the media. It is only three days ago that Suryanarayana Rao has telephoned his family members and said he is safe and will be returning in three days.
