Punitive tax on faction leaders

Hyderabad, April 24, 2006

In view of the growing factional violence in the State especially in Rayalaseema, the Government has decided on Monday to revive the AP Control of Organized Crime Act (APCOCA), to curb the crime in the State with some modifications. In a series of measures, the Government decided to impose the long proposed punitive tax on faction leaders, withdraw police security given to them and set up special teams.

The Government will set up a special court to try faction related cases for speedy disposal. The decisions were taken at a high-level committee convened by the Home Minister K Jana Reddy on Monday. He said the Bill would have more or less the same provisions Act with a couple of changes that were suggested. It may be recalled that the Telugu Desam Government enacted the Act in 2001 for a period of three years and the Congress Government revive it in view of severe factional crimes in Rayalaseema. The Minister said that an ordinance would be issued soon. He said that gun incenses issued to faction leaders would be cancelled forthwith. Five special teams had been constituted to check factionism and arrest the leaders.
