Two years survey covers 512 jail lifers
Hyderabad, April 20, 2006According to a survey on the situational analysis of the prisoners, conducted by the Prison Fellowship India revealed that nearly a quarter of the prisoners serving life term in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa are suffering from HIV/AIDS. The survey says that 21.46 per cent of male prisoners and 27.58 per cent of women were found to be HIV positive. Another 0.5 per cent male prisoners were suffering from TB and .25 per cent with sexually transmitted diseases.
The survey had been carried over two years, covering 512 lifers in the jails at Anatapur, Chanchalguda (W), Cherlapally, Nellore, Rajahmundry (Women's), Warangal and Bargah in Orissa. Prison Fellowship India founder chairman Dr Kunjomon Chacko stressed the need for rehabilitating these prisoners. The Prison Fellowship counsels and prepares the prisoners on life sentence on how to lead a normal life after being released from jails.
