High Court directs doctors to call off strike
Hyderabad, April 14, 2006
The Andhra Pradesh High Court asked the striking doctors to call off the strike by April 18 or face contempt of action in violation of its earlier order. A two-member division bench comprising Chief Justice HN Singhvi and Justice Bhavani Prasad took a public interest litigation filed by Dr. CL Venkata Rao challenging the ongoing junior doctors strike despite Friday being a court holiday. Friday, the April 14, 2006 is Good Friday and is a national holiday.
The Government in its statement submitted to the High court stated about the medical services its is providing in the state. The Principal Secretary, Medical and Health filed an affidavit stating that the government was taking all necessary steps to provide medical facilities to the needy in view of the situation that arose due to strike by junior doctors. The Bench also directed the Government to take assistance of doctors from Railways, Defence and other private practitioners. Meanwhile, Home Minister K Rosiah said that the Government is not in a position to take action on the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar of the University. The AP Junior Doctors Association (APJDA) and other bodies who are on strike for the last 10 days have said that they would hold a meeting to decide their future course of action.
