Global tenders for the Rs. 590 crore project to be called

Hyderabad, April 11, 2006

The Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH) would shortly be taking up work on storm water drains (SWD), sources said. The MCH effort is powered by the Rs.147 crores that it got from the National Urban Renewal Mission. The project cost is estimated at Rs. 590 crores and the MCH will float a global tender to execute the job. When the improvement of SWDs was mooted in the year 2000, the estimated cost was Rs.300 crores.

The city has 28 primary drains, 28 secondary drains and 15 tertiary drains. The big three are the Balkapur, Murkand Kukatpally-Begampet. There are about 8000 encroachments on these canals which would be taken up in the first phase. MCH additional commissioner, Ravi Babu said that the MCH will widen them by 10 ft and the project affected properties will come down to nearly 2000. The Superintendent Engineer, Irrigation, Y.Chalapathi Rao said that the MCH has hired Kirloskar Consultants to submit a solution report.
