Heavy rains that lashed the State during the last one day claimed ten lives. In view of floods and heavy rains forecast, the Government has put the authorities in several districts on heavy alert.
The Meteorological Authorities said the low pressure area which brought heavy rain was likely to intensify into a depression. They issued heavy rain fall warning in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East and West Godavari districts, Khammam, Warangal and Karimnagar. According to reports nearly ten persons were dead due to heavy rains in various places in the State. The Chief Minister, YS.Rajasekhara Reddy reviewed the situation at a high level meeting and directed the officials concerned to be on vigilant against possible damage and outbreak of epidemics. He directed them to take up timely rescue and relief measures in the affected areas. He cancelled scheduled visit to Adilabad for his ‘Rajiv Nagarabaata’ due to bad weather.
According to S.Goel, Commissioner, Disaster Management, heavy rain caused inundation of low lying areas in several districts including Nalgonda, Guntur and Karimnagar. A control room was opened at his office with telephone nos. 23451043/23456005. APSRTC has cancelled its 30 rural services as a precautionary measure.

The Andhra Pradesh Scheduled Tribes Employees’ Association has urged the Government to appoint a committee of expert doctors to study the reasons for frequent occurrence of fever in the agency areas. After the committee submits its report, the Government should initiate steps to prevent recurrence.
The President E.Anjaneyulu and the General Secretary, PV Ramana in a statement issued in Visakhapatnam said the Visakhapatnam branch had informed the organization that hundreds of affected tribals were in the grip of fear and that some of them even died. They appealed the Chief Minister to sanction financial assistance to the victims’ families.

Two landmines planted by the naxals were unearthed in the Agency area of the district on Sunday. The landmines were detected between Sileru and Darakonda in Dupplivada area of GK Veedhi mandal according to Superintendent of Police,(rural) VV Srinivasarao. He said that the explosives were packed in a stainless steel carrier.

One of the members of Planning Commission has supported the argument of tribals who are getting displaced under Polavaram and Pushkara irrigation projects should get higher compensation and better deal in rehabilitation has gained ground.
The tribals deserve reasonable compensation and rehabilitation package and they should be treated on a separate footing according to Dr.BL.Mungekar, member of the Planning Commission said at a press conference on Sunday.
