The Chief Minister, YS.Rajasekhara Reddy while discussing the law and order situation on the concluding day of Collector's conference on Saturday advised the Collectors and SPs to maintain restrain during a dharna or a public agitation by arresting and binding over unruly elements to the courts instead of resorting to excessive use of force like firing and lathicharge.

He instructed the officers to develop interior and remote areas affected by naxalite activity using funds available under the newly created Remote and Interior Area Development Department. Speaking to reporters, the Revenue Minister, D.Prasada Rao said in line with the problems highlighted by the Collectors, 24 Junior colleges would be established immediately in mandal headquarters, which did not have this facility.

The Health Minister, K.Rosaiah on Saturday disapproved of the action of Minorities Welfare Minister Mohammed Fareeduddin in making public the internal correspondence between various departments. The remarks made by him at a press conference in the light of the controversial role played by him in getting the minority status for Shadan Medical College in a matter of few days.

The authorities of the NTR University of Health Sciences make it clear that this status cannot be made applicable for this academic year as it came three days after the counselling for admission into the MBBS course. Mr.Rosaiah backed the university's stand that the minority status accorded to the college would come into effect from the next academic year only. Fareeduddin had denied that he had blamed the Health department for the present controversy.

Guntur
An inmate of the Guntur district jail reportedly committed suicide on Saturday while undergoing treatment at the Jail ward in the Government General Hospital. He was lodged in the jail on Wednesday on the charge of stabbing excise officials when they tried to restrict him from illicitly distilling liquor and was remanded to judicial custody according to police sources.

The Zilla Parishad General Body which met on Saturday asked the administration to initiate special measures to check the outbreak of epidemics in tribal areas. Members said that the on set of monsoon make the people in the tribal habitations vulnerable to diseases such as malaria and viral fevers.

The DM & HO said that the department was fully geared up and five emergency medical teams were kept as a stand by. The teams have been equipped with facilities to rush to the patients. He further said, that adequate medicines were available to the public hospitals and health centres and doctors were asked to make their services available round the clock.
