The Government conceding the CPI (M) demand will constitute an official committee to study problems in regularizing the land encroached by the poor after 1990. This was announced by the Home Minister, K.Jana Reddy on Wednesday after meeting party leaders in the light of the indefinite hunger strike, which had entered the sixth day. The party called off the fast. Mr.Reddy accompanied by the Municipal Administration Minister, K.Rangarao offered juice to CPI (M) activists. The committee would comprise the Secretaries of Revenue, Municipal Administration, Social Welfare and House, in addition to a representative of the Chief Commissionerate of Land Administration. District Collectors would be told to sort out pending issues relating to GO 508 besides extending its time limit to March 1, 2006.

A leading businessman, educationist and the district Congress committee publicity secretary, R.Prakash Rao was killed in a road accident and two others escaped unhurt when the car in which they were traveling hit a stranded lorry on the outskirts of Jam village near Nagpur in Maharashtra in the early hours of Wednesday.

The Finance Minister, K.Rosaiah, has given a commitment to ensure Pay Revision Commission benefits to employees much earlier than two months, the dead line for the three member committee to make its recommendations. He told the press on Wednesday that the committee was asked to complete the job fast and finalize the recommendations in consultation with employees’ associations, so that the benefits were cleared by the Cabinet at its next meeting. The committee would go into the financial implications to the exchequer. With a view to completing the process early, it would hold its first meeting with the associations before July 30.
