Municipalities in the State will get a massive facelift and the ongoing urban infrastructure improvement a big boost with the World Bank agreeing in principle to fund the Rs.1320 crores Andhra Pradesh Urban Reforms and Municipal Services Project.

This was announced by the Chief Minister, YS Rajasekhara Reddy while reviewing the project details at a high level meeting on Thursday. He directed the officials to work out the programmes under the project in such a manner that every urban home is covered by development activity according to an official release.

Heavy spell of rain on Friday evening brought the entire city to a halt and recorded rain fall of 6cm said to be the highest ever in such a short span, submerging most parts of the city in waist-deep water.

Roads turned into huge pools of floodwater and even railway tracks at Khiratabad were under water. Vehicles were stranded for hours due to the heavy downpour. Many low-lying areas were flooded with water entering into houses and shops. As many as 107 houses were completely damaged and about five hundred families evacuated to six relief camps.

The Joint Action Committee of University and College Teachers Associations on Friday asked the Government to merge the Dearness Allowance with the basic pay for all teachers in universities and colleges as recommended by the Fifth Pay Commission and accepted by the Central Government.

Addressing a press conference, the JAC co conveners said that the Government had promised to solve the issue within two days during the discussions that were held in March this year. But, there was no positive action on the promise so far.

Nine persons were killed and nine others critically injured in a road accident on the NH 5 at Duggirala in the early hours of Friday.

According to information, the accident occurred when a lorry carrying limestone powder from Visakhapatnam to Jaggayyapet in Krishna district hit a road divider and turned upside down. Three women and four children were among those dead in the brutal accident.
