The Andhra Pradesh Government’s efforts to secure the prestigious Volkswagen car project in Visakhapatnam got mired in controversy with the company sacking its top official, Helmut Schuster on the charge of bribery. The controversary arose over the Government’s action in making an advance payment of Rs.11 crores towards its equity participation for the project on a direction from Mr.Schuster to a Delhi agency, Vasishta Wahan. The State Government received a letter from the company regarding this latest development and that an enquiry was instituted against him for his suspected involvement in fraud and breach of trust in financial deals. The Chief Minister, YS Rajasekhara Reddy said that the money released was safe since a reputed company like Volkswagen was connected with the whole affair. He clarified that Vasishta Wahan was formed on the request of Volkswagen itself as its nominee for the project and that the money released only after consulting an established solicitor, Premchand Mangaldas and said that the money will not go anywhere. In a press conference, the Major Industries Minister, B.Satyanaraya denied the TDP allegation that he had received kickbacks out of the deal and that he was behind Vasishta Wahan. He insisted that the car project was going to be a reality and referred to the company’s later letter.
