Civic Chief Election on September 30

The stage is set for crucial indirect election of Mayors and Chairpersons of Municipal corporations and municipalities on Friday. The meeting will be called to order at 11am in all the civic bodies where the presiding officer appointed by the District Collector and the observer nominated by the State Election Commission would over see the election of new chiefs. The candidate for the office of Mayor or Chairperson has to be proposed by one member and seconded by another. Those candidates representing recognized political party will have to produce the authorization from the State president of the party by 10am on the day of election. The election will be held by show of hands. In the event of tie between two or more candidates, the presiding officer will draw lots in the presence of the members and the candidates whose name is first drawn will be declared elected. The whip has no application to MPs and MLAs whether elected on a party ticket or who subsequently became associate members. All the members have to be present at the meeting. Banking and insurance services remained paralyzed while there was partial disruption of APSRTC bus services during the one day nation wide strike called by the Left parties on Thursday against the UPA Government's economic policies and the move to dilute labour laws. Train services however, remain normal. The response to the strike was overwhelming and the strike passed off without any case of violence except for the arrest of 34 CITU and AITUC workers in Hyderabad and Godavarikhani. Three flights were cancelled at Hyderabad airport while and rail and APSRTC services remained by and large normal. The brother in law of the Chief Minister, P. Ravindranath Reddy has decided to take oath as the first Kadapa Mayor on the ZP premises in the presence of the people on October 5. Mr. Ravindranath Reddy will however, take oath as corporator in the Kadapa Municipal Corporation on September 30. The party has decided to make K. Nabi Rasool as Deputy Mayor.
