East Godavari district is poised for a white revolution with the district administration to supply Murrah buffaloes to members of the Self Help Groups providing bank linkage as part of women’s empowerment programme. Under the scheme, some 4000 Murrah buffaloes are proposed to the supplied to the SHG members by extending bank loans at a lower interest of 3% per annum.
The District Collector Anil Kumar Singhal who is keen on supplying the Murrah buffaloes in view of its higher milk yields on studying the price structure quoted by private suppliers was inclined for direct purchase eliminating the middleman totally. Mean while, the DRDA has launched awareness camps with SHG members in the mandals connected by milk routes of Visakha Dairy. It is the sixth successive year that East Godavari district has occupied the prime position in linking bank credit to SHG not only in the State but in the entire country.
