The ten day ‘Operation Kolleru’ undertaken by the West Godavari district administration with a view to freeing Kolleru lake from encroachments and facilitating free flow of flood water into the sea from the lake, turned violent on Saturday following a attack on a Sub Inspector of Police and a constable by a striking mob of fishermen. The injured police were shifted to Government Hospital for treatment.
Hundreds of people from nearby villages blocked the road since morning to register their protest against enforcement of GO 120 and stall the demolition of fish tanks by the official machinery.
Even after the police maintained cool after the incident, the protesters gave different picture and when the situation is going to be out of order, they used lathi charge to disburse the agitators.
