Hailstorm claims lives of 28

Hyderabad, May 3, 2005

The recent hailstorm that struck in eleven districts claimed 28 lives with Guntur accounting to 11 deaths and 9 in Nalgonda district. More than 340 houses were fully damaged in seven districts. Crops in over 4700 hectors in nine districts were totally damaged according to preliminary reports. The cattle loss put to 440.

The Chief Minister, Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy who reviewed the damage and human loss at a meeting held on Tuesday instructed the Collectors concerned to assess the damage and disburse relief immediately to the affected persons and also to the families of the victims. The Chief Minister sanctioned Rs.50000 from the Chief Minister's relief fund in addition to Rs.50000 payable under the Apathbandhu scheme to the next kith and kin of the victims.
