Heat wave claims ten in the State

Hyderabad, May 17, 2005

Extreme heat wave conditions prevailing in Andhra Pradesh in the past few days have claimed ten lives in different districts. The Government however confirmed only two deaths in Prakasam District. The Commissioner for Disaster Management ruled out payment of exgratia to their families under the Apathbandhu scheme since the insurance company operating the scheme did not consider sunstroke deaths to be accidents.

Hanamkonda in Warangal district was the hottest place on Tuesday which recorded a day temperature of 47 degrees Celsius. According to Meteorology Director, G.Sudhakararao attributed the sudden increase in temperature which remained high even at night in some place to the dry north-westerly winds blowing across the State from Gujarat.
