Police foil major destructive designs of Naxals

Visakhapatnam, May 15, 2005

The Visakhapatnam Rural Police have recovered directional mines foiling major destruction designs of the CPI (Maoists) on Andhra Orissa boarder. A total of seven mines, including were recovered on Sunday morning at Nerellabanda of GK Veedhi mandal.

For the first time in the State, directional mines were recovered before the Maoists used them. The Superintendent of Police, Sanjay Kumar Jain told reporters that the recovery based on a tip off, clearly demonstrated how the naxals used the time during the talks with the Government to launch destructive activities. He said each mine could not only destroy a police station building but also could lead to huge civilian causalities. Each mine weights some half a ton and requires 20 men to be moved from one point to the other. Big safe like boxes were filled with gelatine sticks, shot put balls, five kg.weights and shrapnel. Three sides of the box were lined with think iron sheets and the fourth side with tin. The mine is hung from a pulley on rods set up in a triangular shape. The whole equipment was mounted on a rice laden lorry and taken opposite the targeted building. The explosive was triggered first by a camera flash and than by a remote controlled device. The SP further said that four claymore mines were also recovered from the nearby hillocks.
