Ten Maoists killed in an encounter

Nizamabad, March 7, 2005

In an encounter that accounted for the highest number of casualties after the peace process was initiated by the Government, ten members of the CPI (Maoists) including three women were killed by the police in deep inside a forest near Manala in Nizamabad district on Monday. This caused a major set back to the Maoists as the slain naxals included the District Committee secretary, Ramesh, and other leaders. Two naxal couples were eliminated in the encounter Meanwhile, naxals shot dead a police constable C Babu Rao in Ssileru in Visakhapatnam district. The policeman who was dressed in civilian clothes was returning home on a motorcycle after dropping his three children in school. He was a tribal and was never involved in anti naxal operations according to the DGP Swarnjit Sen. In Nalgonda district, naxals set ablaze two buses of the APSRTC on Monday afternoon in retaliation for the encounter.

Naxals also burnt the signaling room and damaged computers at the railway station in the temple town of Annavaram in East Godavari district. The exchange of fire in Nizamabad was on a hillock nearby Jojyanaik tanda under the Manala panchayat. On specific information, Greyhounds, the elite anti naxal outfit of the police surrounded the hillock from three sides and caught the extremists unawares. The bodies of the slain naxal bearing multiple bullet injuries were found strewn at four places atop the hillock. The scene of the encounter indicated that the police may not have faced stiff resistance from the naxals and could finish off the operation swifty.

The Chief Minister, Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy termed it as unfortunate and said that the police count not remain quiet when private persons carried weapons illegally, He denied that the Government had nay plans to re impose the ban on naxals.
