APSRTC Unions to go on strike from 16th

Hyderabad, March 14, 2005

Two of the three major trade unions Transport Mazdoor Sangh and Employees Union in the APSRTC have declared that they will go on an indefinite strike from 16th March to press their demands.At a press conference held on Monday, the general secretary of the Transport Mazdoor Sangh M Nageswararao said they had no alternative, as the management had been unresponsive. The major demands include reduction of motor vehicle tax to two percent as recommended by the Andhra Pradesh Revenue Reforms Committee and slashing sales tax on diesel, total reimbursement of concessions and curbing of illicit operations which cut into the RTC's earnings by about Rs. 500 crores a year.

Meanwhile, the Vice Chairman and Managing Director P.Gautam Kumar reiterated an appeal he had been making ever since the two unions that had served strike notice on the management.He said that the Government was sympathetic was evident from the way it had reimbursed concessions upto fifty percent and given a Rs.125 crore soft loan apart from constituting a high level committee.
