Maoist attacks Police Station - Seven killed

Guntur, March 12, 2005

The lightning attack by Maoists on Chilakaluripet police station in Guntur district, which left three civilians and four policemen dead on Friday night, was a well conceived and executed plan. Nearly 40 naxals descended on the police station in a busy area of the town around midnight and blocked all roads leading to it. They divided themselves into three groups. Two of them launched simultaneous attacks on the station and residential quarters behind while the third kept a watch outside. The slain Circle Inspector R.Prasad and his friend, KV Reddy were talking to the Town Sub Inspector R Dharmendra Babu on the first floor when the naxals hurled grenades on the station. Mr.Prasad who tried to flle into his house behind the office collapsed after being hit by naxals bullets. Mr Dharmendra Babu who carried a pistol jumped into adjacent compound from the first floor office of the CI on noticing the naxals. Naxals entered the SI house where they shot dead his mother.

The Chief Minister, Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy, the Home Minister K Jana Reddy, the DGP Swaranjit Sen who visited Guntur and Chilkaluripet paid floral tributes to the slain policemen and consoled the bereaved families. The Chief Minister announced a compensation package of Rs.12 lakhs for the family of the CI, Rs.9 lakhs each for the kin of other police personnel and Rs.5 lakhs for the dependents of civilians and promised them of taking care of all their needs.
