A meeting of the Chief Secretaries and Directors-General of Police of 13 States organized by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday decided to constitute joint task forces of police to check naxal activity in six States. Andhra Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Orissa and Maharashtra, which have a contiguous forest and where naxal violence is higher than the rest of the country, have been selected for joint operations. Recognizing the naxal problem was not limited to one State as it had trans-border implications, the meeting authorized the police chiefs of the six States to plan operations in consultation with one another to put down militancy. The meeting was presided by the Union Home Secretary, VK Duggal who told the reporters that joint anti naxal operations had been tried successfully in the past.
