The flash strike in the anchorage port has been called off and the steel barges with rice left the jetty for the anchorage around 6pm according to D Suryarao, president of the Cocanada Chamber of Commerce. He said that the strike was called off unconditionally and no talks were held with the union leaders on the issue. Expressing happiness over the development, Mr.Suryarao said that the Chamber had made it clear to the steel barge owners that it would not be in the interest of the anchorage port, to them and the workers as well, if the strike continued. The situation was precipitated by the shipping agents by denial of work passes to the HMS union workers who have been doing the shipment of clinker all these years.
As per the assurance by the Government to the port workers, all the traditional cargoes have to be handled at the anchorage port and the deepwater port has to generate its own cargo. When the clinker started coming to the port, the workers, though resisted initially, later reconciled and agreed to handled the same at the deepwater port securing some concessions in their favour.
