The death of a Dalit youth under mysterious circumstances at Pathuru in West Godavari district triggered ten hour long Rasta roko on the Eluru Jangareddigudem State highway. The youth working as a servant on annual salary of Rs 9,000 in the house a landlord was found dead in the morning at the latter's house over a decade. A poison bottle was found on the victim's near by and the protesters alleged that it was a ploy by the employer.
The employer pleaded his innocence, saying the youth had committed suicide by consuming poison. Backed up by the CPI, CPI ML and various Dalit outfits a large number of Dalits from surrounding villages staged a Rasta roko by placing boulders across the road at this mandal headquarters town from 7am onwards. The agitators relented following the arrest of the landlord and an assurance from the local Congress MLA that the accused would pay compensation and the Government ex gratia.
