The talks between the Government and the Association representatives failed and the Government was left with no alternative except to impose ESMA on Tuesday and threatened to cancel their licenses. The leaders of the AP Chemists and Druggists Association said that they were prepared to surrender en masse the licenses of 36000 members. The bandh by the druggists entered the fifth day disrupting the availability of medicines to patients.
Although the pharmacies attached to major hospital remained open, there was heavy rush of people while medicines were in short supply. Speaking to the press, the Commercial Tax Minister, Konathala Ramakrishna said that police protection would be provide to shop owners willing to sell medicines. The Government would be opened in the Government hospitals to sell drugs. The Bulk Drug Manufacturers Association had expressed its willingness to supply life saving drugs to the Government outlets. Two writ petitions before the Divisional Bench, felt it this is a serious issued and directed the Government to inform its stand by Wednesday and the steps taken.
