The police opens 15 rounds of fire and lobbed teargas shells on Saturday on an irate mob of nearly two thousand farmers displaced by the Thotapalli barrage project which was at the centre of a controversy only last week over allegations of irregularities in the tenders. The firing climaxed a pitched battle for over 30 minutes between supporters of the displaced persons and the police at Mettupaka junction from the project site.
Nearly twenty persons including the Parvathipuram Sub Divisional Police Officer and seven constables suffered head injuries in the stone throwing. The district administration clamped section 144 and deployed a large police force. The Joint Collector held discussions with the CPI (M) leaders and also with the TDP leaders and assured them of rehabilitation package and appealed to them to allow continuation of the work.
