Peace talks goes on – little progress made
|
Hyderabad
After two days talks between the revolutionary groups and Government went on in a cordial atmosphere. The third day talks would begin on Monday where the distribution of land would dominate the day's talks. The leaders of the CPI (Maoist) and the Janashakti presented to the Government a document listing 43 influential individuals and companies who, they alleged had encroached upon agricultural lands of more than 25,000 acres in and around the twin cities.
Reacting to the list of demands, the Home Minister, K.Jana Reddy offered to set up a commission 'as soon as possible' to identify surplus and Government land available for distribution to the poor. There were nearly 32 categories of Government land and data was being collected since the past four months to ascertain their status. While appreciating the Government effort in this direction, Ramakrishna, Moist leader rejected the idea of setting up of a judicial commission and wanted committees filled with democrats and people's organizations to be set up. Amar, the Janashakti leader said land distribution was essential for restoration of peace.
Ramakrishna turned down the Government claim that no land is surplus and demanded that the ceiling from 18 acres for wet land to 5 acres while 54 acres of dry land to 10 acres. He also demanded to no compensation should be paid for the acquired land. He wanted the Government to regularize ownership of all lands seized in people's movements.
