The Bandh call given by Viswa Hindu Parishad to protest against the arrest of Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi evoked mixed response in the State on Monday.

Majority of the people ignored the bandh call given in Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Tirupati and Vijayawada and some urban areas while the closure was near total in the districts like Cuddapah, Kurnool, Nellore and Nizamabad and was partial in Karimnagar, Nalgonda, Adilabad, Chittor, Krishna and Medak districts.

Except, some stray incidents, like pelting stones on APSRTC buses and other passing vehicles, the bandh was peaceful. In the incidents nearly 17 buses were damaged in different parts of the city. The police resorted to a mild Lathicharge near Masab Tank when the ABVP supporters blocked the main road causing a traffic jam.

The police took 47 VHP workers. In several towns, the managements declared holiday for schools and colleges. The bandh was total and peaceful in Nellore where all shops, banks, commercial establishments and cinema halls were closed. The APSRTC buses went off the roads and four buses were damaged. The BJP however continued its hunger strike.

Four children died in Penuballi and sathupalli mandals within 24 hours of the pulse polio immunization programme. The deaths are being attributed by their parents to die side effects of the vaccine. Members of the rapid response team deputed by the World Health Organization and medical teams from Hyderabad are on the way to the villages.

The District Medical and Health Officer, Krishna Brahmam, stated that the death of the children had nothing to do with the oral polio vaccine. Meanwhile, the Pulse Polo immunization programme was suspended more as a precautionary measure in these two mandals.

A Division Bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, comprising Chief Justice, Devinder Gupta and justice M.Narayana Reddy on Monday directed the District Sessions Judge, Warangal to submit a report regarding the conditions prevailing in Warangal Central Jail and the incidents in the jail.

The Bench passed the order while dealing a writ petition filed by the People's Union of Civil Liberties represented by its general secretary, Jaya. Ms.Jaya sought a direction to the Government to permit a team of its activists and advocates to visit the jail and conduct an enquiry in this regard.

The Viswa Hindu Parishad will give a 'Chalo Kanchi' call during the month end or early next month irrespective of the release of the Kanchi Acharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi form jail. Speaking to reporters on Monday, the VHP State (West) general secretary, T.Muralidhar Rao said the national leadership of the organization would give the cal. He said the bandh call was a success in the State.
