53% of students who appeared for the Senior Intermediate Examinations conducted by the Board of Intermediate Education held in March 2004 have passed. The results of the examinations were released today.

Results of the Assembly and Lok Sabha seats in the State would be displayed by the State Information Centre at RTC complex junction on Tuesday and Thursday respectively on the advice of the District Collector. The results would be announced with the help of huge display boards and public address system according to the Assistant Director.

Girls outshine boys in the Intermediate second year examination this year too registering a pass percentage of 57.21 per cent as against 50.53 per cent among boys. The over all pass percentage amount the regular candidates registered a giant leap this year from the lowly 46.62 per cent last year and 47.03 percent in 2002 to an impressive of 53.31 percent.

A remand prisoner in the Tuni sub jail, Yellamanchi apparao reportedly committed suicide in the prison in the early hours of Sunday.

Two women died and five other sustained injuries when a mini water tank constructed by the Rural Water Supply wing of the Panchayat Raj Department a month ago, collapsed in Chandrayanapalli village under the Dichpalli police station limits. The tank collapsed when the women were filling water crushing them resulting in the instantaneous death of Venkavva, Six others were rescued and rushed to the district headquarters hospital and one was declared dead.

The police arrested the dismissed Andhra University Professor S.Surappadu and 24 others on Sunday after a mild lathicharge when they tried to submit memoranda to Executive Council members. Trouble broke out when a team led by Prof.Surappadu under the aegis of AU employees' Rights Protection Committee allegedly tried to barge into the Central Administrative Building to present memoranda to the Council members demanding a bold initiative to end the 'undemocratic rule of V.C.' when a meeting was in progress. A large police force which was present on the campus in advance anticipating trouble immediately picked up the agitators and bundled them in waiting police vans.
