Three more farmers commit suicide


The burden of debts due to failure of crops claimed the life of three farmers in various areas in Anathapur, Nalgonda and Tirupathi.

Assembly session opens from 31st May


The recently elected members will take oath of affirmation when the inaugural session of the 12th AP Legislative Assembly begins at 11am on Monday.

The Chief Minister YS Rajasekharara Reddy who had spearheaded a spirited attack on the TDP Government as leader of the Opposition in the 11th Assembly, will be the first to take the oath in his capacity as the leader of the 294 member House followed by Nara Chandrababu Naidu, as leader of the Opposition, heading the 47 member TDP and ministers will be administered the oath by the pro tem Speaker P.Sambasiva Raju, Senior most member of the House, as per alphabetical order.

Elaborate security arrangements have been made for the session. Quick Reaction Teams, 12 platoons drawn from the City Armed Reserve and the AP Special Police will form part of the security arrangements.

Sobharaju to take free classes


The noted singer, Sobharaju, will organize Vesavi Vennala, a free training programme in the rendering of Annamacharaya Kritis at the Guruazada Kalasheta in Siripuram from June 4th to 12th. At a press conference on Sunday, the regional vice chairman of Annamacharaya Bhavana Vahini said classes would be held between 6pm to 8pm every day. HCL, BSNL merger sought


The Hindustan Cables Ltd., Employees' Union in a representation to the Chief Minister has sought the merger of HCL with the BSNL so as to utilise its manpower for manufacture of any electronic/electrical components used for BSNL.In a statement issued by the president and secretary, they said since the merger may take some time, the BSNL may be asked to place further orders with HCL along with advance, as was done earlier. This would provide work for employees.

Inter supplementary practical exams


The practical examinations of the Advanced Supplementary Intermediate examination will now be held from June 16th to 21st according to press release.

Steps afoot for talks with naxals:DGP


The Police Department will create a conducive atmosphere for initiating a dialogue with the People's War according to the DGP.S.R.Sukumara. The DGP who was here on Sunday in connection a private function, told reporters in an informal chart that the Chief Minister, YS Rajasekhara Reddy, instructed the police to ensure that a congenial atmosphere was created for talks with naxalites. Instructions have been issued to the Superintendents of Police of all districts.

Food for Work rice seized in vigilance raids


Sleuths of the Vigilance and Enforcement Department raided godowns in the Toorangi area on the town outskirts on Sunday and seized 612 tonnes of rice worth over Rs.60 lakhs meant for the 'Food for work' programme. A shipping clearing and forwarding agent of Visakhapatnam hired the godowns. This is the second biggest haul of FFW rice in Kakinada within a fortnight. The first haul, 1613 tonnes of rice worth over Rs.1.5 crores was seized in the new port area.

Green signal for Pushkaram works


The Minister for Endowments, Mr.Satyanarayana Rao on Sunday gave a green signal for all works pertaining to the Krishna Pushakarams. It may be recalled that four days ago, following complaints of improprieties in the works, he had ordered a stay into the works, pending review. On Sunday, a review meeting was held in the presence of Mr.Rao and the Minister of Municipal Administration, Koneru Ranga Rao, some MLAs and an MP from the five districts in the State, through which the river Krishna flows. The meeting was attended by officials from 13 related departments and the Commissioner for Information and Public Relations K.V.Ramanachary.

Three killed in accident


Three persons were killed and 11 injured in two separate accidents in the district on Sunday. According to police, a jeep carrying 13 persons of a marriage party who were going from Narasannapeta in Srikakulam district to Gajuwaka dashed against a stationary lorry under Bhogapuram police limits. In another accident, one person killed on the spot when the victim accidentally slipped from the cabin door of a moving lorry.

Centre to adopt new strategy for thrust in 14 areas


The Union Tribal Welfare Ministry will adopt a new strategy giving the much-needed thrust in 14 areas for the overall development of tribal areas in the country. Simultaneously, it intends to channelise the energies of unemployed youth by creating self-employment opportunities to them by categorizing them into four groups-educated unemployed and skilled, educated but unskilled, illiterate but skilled and illiterate and unskilled. According to a press release issued by Secretary, Tribal Welfare on Sunday.

Funds sanctioned for lift Irrigation


The Minister for Lift Irrigation, M.Mareppa, on Sunday signed his first file, sanctioning Rs.40 crores for grounding of works pertaining to 18 Lift Irrigation schemes in eight districts of the State, aimed to bringing 16,000 acres under the plough. The eight districts are Adilabad, Guntur, Nizamabad, Prakasam Vizianagaram and West Godavari.

Konathala to widen commercial tax net


The Commercial taxes Department will go all out to boost revenue collection so that the money can be used to bring succour to the poorer sections, in tune with the pro-people agenda of the Congress in a press conference, the Minister said on Sunday.
