Shiv Shanker resigns from Congress

Hyderabad

A senior Congressman and head of the other Backward Classes cell of the All India Congress Committee, P.Shiva Shankar, resigned from the primary membership of the party today. Mr. Shankar has held several key portfolios in the Cabinets of India Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi was apparently annoyed over the manner of selection of candidates for the elections. At a press conference, he said he would not reconsider the decision and he had no plans at the moment to join any party. He alleged that the party was not fair to the weaker sections in the allotment of ticket.

Vijaya Shanti not to contest poll

In a sudden breakthrough development, the BJP nominated Subhash Chanderji, the Deputy Mayor as a candidate for the Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat in place of film actress and Mahila Morcha's vice-president, Vijaya Shanti. Announcing this at a press conference on Tuesday, the State BJP President N. Indrasena Reddy said that the Central Party requested Ms.Vijayashanti not to contest the elections and spare her services for campaigning in the States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Naidu.

Dissidence reaches the peak point

Dissidence in the Congress in Andhra Pradesh reached a boiling point today when a number of senior leaders announced their decision to resign form the party protesting against the seat sharing agreement with the TRS and alleged manipulation by the PCC leadership in the selection of candidates. The party faced revolt in Mahabubnagar, Medak, Hyderabad, Warangal and Nalgonda districts.

TDP urban chief to resign from party

In a major development, the TDP urban district president, Bharanikana Rama Rao has decided to resign from the party and contest as a rebel against the official candidate for Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha seat. In a related development, the supporters of the sitting TDP MLA from Pendurthy PVGR Naidu took out a rally and burnt an effigy of Mr.MVVS Murthy.

Congress to form pool panels

The City Congress Committee would form election committees for the Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha constituency and the Visakhapatnam I and II Assembly constituencies to carry out the election campaigning, its president, Dronamraju Srinivasarao said on Tuesday. The Party's Comparators along with presidents of ward committees and the frontal organisations of the party will be the members of these committees.

30 devotees hurt in mishap at Bhadrachalam

Thirty persons were injured, eight of them seriously as the lorry in which they were traveling overturned near Chintoor on Tuesday evening while they were returning after taking part in the Sreerama Navami festival at Sriramgiri temple in Bhadrachalam division.

PWG naxalites blasted the house of the Galiveedu mandal Parishad president Avula Venatanarayana Reddy of the TDP in Perampalli Panchayat headquarters in Galiveedu mandal round Monday midnight. Seven armed naxalites including two women stormed the MPP's house.

The TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu has replaced nine members of the dissolved House and renominated three Ministers in the fourth list of candidates for the assembly elections.

Former Congress MLAs to contest as Independents

The former Congress MLAs from Bobbili, Parvathipuram and Gajapathinagaram have expressed displeasure for denying them ticket. The former MLA from Bobbili Peddinit Jaganmohanrao has decided to contest as Independent. He is filing nomination for both Assembly and Bobbili Lok Sabha seat on Wednesday.

Security has been stepped up in the Udayagiri area of Nellore district following the appearance of some posters, reportedly put up by the PWG a warning contestants of the BJP and TDP. Similar posters have appeared in the Marripadu area also.

Security forces have been deployed in the agency area of the district and combing has been going on the Superintendent of Police Y.Nagi Reddy has said. The police are keeping a strict vigil in interior villages too and called for rejecting the poll boycott call of PWG.
