The Minister for Steel has offered to look into the issues of the expansion of the capacity of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and payment of three years of wage arrears to its employees, according to the recognized INTUC Visakha Steel Employees Congress.

The Chief Minister, YS Rajasekhara Reddy, announced a number of measures for prevention of suicide by farmers and expressed the Congress Government's will solve their problems. He said that the Government will resolve to end 'this sorrowful legacy of the TDP' in two years, even as the Assembly adopted an unanimous resolution appealing to distressed farmers not to resort to the extreme step with the assurance that all its members were solidly behind them.
The additional initiatives include five sops to the farmers - inclusion of the MLA and the Sarpanch in the local committee that investigates suicide cases for granting the package, the package even in cases of suicide involving non farmers, six month moratorium on all crop loans, plan to reduce interest rate to 3 per cent for farmers and DWCRA groups and a comprehensive insurance scheme which would allow compensation crop-wise and immediately.

Some dismissed employees of the University in the Assembly premises roughed up the Vice Chancellor of Andhra University, YC Simhadri, on Wednesday.
Dr.Simhadri and the Principal Secretary of Higher Education G Sudhir were waiting for thier car at the alighting point after a meeting with the Chief Minister did not materialize. Suddenly, some dismissed employees of the university, who were carrying on a struggle for reinstatement under the banner of the JAC for Protection of Andhra University pounched upon them.
These employees had been permitted entry into the Assembly premises to represent their case to floor leaders of various parties. While Dr.Simhadri was physically attacked, Mr.Sudhir managed to escape the wrath of the employees.

Suicide by debt-ridden farmers continued with two more ryots ending their life on Wednesday. In Nizamabad, a farmer who attempted to commit suicide by consuming pesticide died while undergoing treatment.

The Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy on Wednesday said the Government was thinking of postponing the collection of loan dues by money lenders, for one season, in places where farmers have committed suicide. In a statement in the Assembly on the spate of farmers' suicides, he said that there had been a demand on this front and the Government would consider it as mounting rural indebtedness amongst farmers was the root cause of the tragedy.
