The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi will visit the tidal wave affected areas of the State on 29th and 30th December. In a news conference on Monday, the Chief Minister, YS Rajasekhara Reddy said that the Prime Minister would reach the Gannavaram airport at 11am and review the relief works and proceed on an aerial survey of West Godavari, Krishna and Godavari districts. Ms.Sonia Gandhi would come from Chennai to Nellore and after visiting a place in Nellore she would proceed to Prakasam district. The Chief Minister after visiting Mypadu in Nellore and Narasur in West Godavari held discussions with the officials said the State would seek from the Centre, twenty thousand houses for fishermen living in hutments in low lying areas close to the seashore. The total property and other losses mostly concerning fishermen was estimated at Rs.32.71 crores. This included damage to 1349 houses, 400 fish tanks, loss of 2000 fishing boats, 47370 fishing nets, 74 rural roads and crop loss spread over 704 acres. The toll mount due to tidal wave rose to 104 with the recovery of more bodies. Search operations continued on a large scale by the Navy and the Coast Guard. The Eastern Naval Command authorities said that five ships had been pressed into operation along with the coast while 10 aircraft on rescue missions to search for the boats and bodies.

A TDP leader from Cuddapah district was shot dead in a private bus by unidentified persons on the outskirts of the city in the early hours of Monday. The victim Veeranjaneyulu who was vice chairman of the party's BC Cell was proceeding to Hyderabad. The victim was fast asleep when the incident took place. The assailants pumped bullets into him from a revolver according to the police, four persons were involved in this operation. Reacting sharply on the incident, the TDP president N.Chandra Babu Naidu gave a call to the Congress to stop what he called political murders. He said that the Chief Minister should act swiftly and put an end to the political murders.

The American Telugu Association of the US has donated Rs.5 lakhs to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. AVN Reddy, president of the Association in a press release on Monday conveyed the members' deep shock and grief at the calamity in the coastal areas.

The hospitals in Chennai, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, Madurai and Colombo in Sri Lanka are gearing up to meet the situation and any future emergency that may arise. The doctors and employees have contributed one day salary working out to Rs.1 crore towards relief and rehabilitation measures of the Governments according to a press release.

The Academic Senate of Andhra University approved the syllabi of the new post graduate course and one the one year advanced post graduate diploma in genetic counselling at its meeting on Monday. The revised syllabi of various courses like mathematics and chemistry, and the proposal for starting M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes in Electronics the Department of Physics along with its syllabus were approved by the Academic Senate.
