Pomp and piety marked the Christmas celebrations at the Asia’s second biggest church, the Church of South India of Medak diocese on Saturday.

The celebrations began early in the morning with special prayers being offered by Bishop BP Sugandhar. Thousands OF worshippers from all districts in the State and neighboring Karnataka thronged the church which was well decorated for the occasion.

Advanced techniques relating to a variety of endoscope surgeries were demonstrated live during a workshop on ‘ERCP and Surgery” held under the aegies of the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology on Saturday. Nearly 200 surgeons and gastroenterologists, including guest faculty from India, USA and the Philippines attend the workshop which was held in connection with the five day 64th annual conference of the Association of Surgeons of India beginning from Saturday.

Two police constables and 14 others were arrested by the city police on Saturday on the charge of kidnapping cattle traders from Tamil Nadu and robbing them of Rs.5 lakhs, three gold rings and three cell phones. Following business rivalry, some traders took the support of the two constables form Ichapuram Police Station of Srikakulam district in abducting Tamil Nadu merchants from the railway station here on Wednesday when they were on their way from Dindigal to Parvathipuram to buy cattle from a shandy.After a hot pursuit, a special team comprising the inspector V.Bheema Rao caught all the accused and recovered the gold rings and mobile phones along with Rs.2.70 lakhs along with the vehicles used in committing the robbery.
