In view of the implementation of VAT from April next year, the Minister for Commercial Taxes Konatala Ramakrishna said that necessary changes will take place. He participated in a meeting held on Monday in the office of the Commissioner of Commercial taxes and held discussions at length for effective implementation of VAT and pros and cons that may arise out of implementation. He said that necessary wings in audit, assignment and recovery areas will be introduced. There are nearly 3500 crores of rupees due to the department and instructed the officials concerned for recovery and a steering committee will be appointed to monitor the progress.

He said exemption has been given to the business community with a turnover of five lakhs and considering relaxation for those whose turn over is in between five to forty lakhs. On this occasion, he inaugurated a book containing the information about VAT and also inaugurated a website.

The State has secured a loan of Rs 100 crores from the NABARD to provide buildings and other infrastructure in high schools. In view of the low female literacy rate in rural areas, priority will be given under the project to girls' schools that lack amenities like classrooms and toilets. The aid will be given under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund.

The State Government had projected high schools as the focus area for assistance since primary schools are already assured of funds through the Centrally sponsored district Primary Education Project and Sarva Sikha Abhiyan.In a press conference on Monday, the School Education Minister, N.Rajyalakshmi said works would begin in January with focus on 290 girls high schools which lacked pucca buildings followed by 1003 other schools whose buildings needed repairs.
