The Chief Minister, YS Rajasekhara Reddy on Saturday told Prime Minister that the new international Airport at Shamshabad which was cleared by the Union Cabinet on 15th December would be named after the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The Bhoomi Pooja would be performed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi. The MoU for the international airport would be signed on Monday.

Adilabad
On the directions of the High Court, Lokeshwaram police registered a case against Adilabad Zilla Parishad chairman Lolam Shyam Sunder in connection with furnishing false age certificates for contesting in 1995 local body polls. According to sources, representatives of a voluntary organization based at Nirmal, complained to police that Lola did not complete 21 years and could not contest in the local body elections. He had contested for the MPTC seat from Pipri and was elected. As the police did not register the case, the voluntary organization filed a petition in the High Court.

Appu alias Krishnaswamy, prime accused in the Sankararaman murder case has surrendered before the Kancheepuram Superintendent of Police, K.Prem Kumar in Chittor district according to the SP VV Gopalakrishna. The SP Gopalakrishna said that he could only know about the surrender before Prem Kumar somewhere in vedurukuppam village in Chittor district and that he was later taken away to Tamilnadu.

The Chief Minister, YS Rajasekhara Reddy said that his Government would fill vacancies in various bodies and corporations in due course. The Chief Minister who met the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi on 19th evening spoke to reporters that she had given certain guidelines for the filling of theses posts and they would be taken into account before making appointments. He said due weight age will be given to SC/ST and backward classes in these appointments.

Karimnagar
The CPI (Maoist) representative and revolutionary writer Varavarao has asked the Government to revive the peace talks process with naxals. He also appealed for extension of ceasefire by another three months. He came to Karimnagar to participate in the 'Amaraveerula bandhu-mitra sangham' district meeting on Sunder. He told the presspersons that the Government should extend the ceasefire and stop combing operations by the police immediately. He further said, they are ready for peace talks with the Government and is free to make the arms issues the first item on the agenda for the second round of talks.

The Andhra Pradesh State Teachers' Union on Sunday demanded 20 per cent interim relief to Government employees, teachers and workers as promised by the Congress before and after the Assembly elections. It wanted the Government to implement the Pay Revision Commission report. At its two day State Executive Meeting, which concluded, the union adopted several resolutions on the problems facing teachers. The executive demanded immediate revision of service rules, filling of 50,000 posts of teachers and posting of 500 mandal education officers and headmasters and 78 DEOs.

An interstate criminal and member of pseudo naxalite group G.Neelakanta Reddy was shot dead in an alleged encounter with the police near Muthyalacheruvu village in Kadiri rural mandal in the early hours of Sunday. He was involved in more than a dozen criminal cases in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka including tow contract killings. The Karnataka police had put a reward of Rs.50, 000 on his head.

The Mala Mahanadu has decided to intensify its agitation to press the Government to review the appointments and admissions made on the basis of categorization of the SCs. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, the Mala Mahanadu president PV Rao said activists of the outfit would start a State wide public movement from 27th December by staging dharnas, rasta rokos, rail rokos and other demonstrations, if the Government did not respond to its demand.
