Violence marks end of filing nominations

Group clashes, arson and police firing at Tadiparti, Chilakaluripet, Ongole and Nagari marked the last day of filing of nominations on Wednesday for 147 Assembly and 21 Lok Sabha constituencies in Andhra Pradesh. The unprecedented scale of violence involved group clashes within the ruling party at two places and with the Congress in Tadiparti Constituency where they traded bombs and stones with supporters of the congress candidate J.C.Diwakara Reddy and in Chilakaluripet. In all the police fired 48 rounds of fine in the air at these places to disperse the warring mobs.

The former Chief Minister and Congress candidate for the Visakhaptnam Lok Sabha seat, N.Janardhana Reddy has lambasted the TDP president N.Chandrababu Naidu for 'ruining the State'. Addressing a massive rally at the Old Post Office under Visakhaptnam I Assembly segment on Wednesday, he said that the State was only left with crores of rupees as debt without any perceptible development.

PM tells BJP leaders to ensure everyone votes

The Prime Minister A.B.Vajpayee advised local BJP leaders to ensure that all the voters exercised their franchise in the ensuring elections. He recalled his previous visits to the city when about a dozen office bearers of the BJP met him at the Hill Top Guest House of Visakhaptnam Steel Plant before he left for Rajahmundry for an election meeting.

YSR ready for debate with TDP on alliances

The former Congress Legislature Party leader Dr.Y.S.Rajasekara Reddy has challenged the Chief Minister N.Chandrababu Naidu for a debate on the alliances of both Congress and the TDP. He launched his election campaign on the third day of his 'Jaitra yatra' program in the Karimnagar district from the Metpally Assembly constituency this afternoon. He addressed roadside meetings in Metpally, Korutla and Raikal. Addressing a well attended meeting in the Congress stronghold Jagtial in the evening Dr.Reddy flayed the TDP for forging an alliance with the BJP for 'selfish gain'

Chief Minister sees anti opposition wave in Visakhapatnam

The TDP president and Chief Minister N.Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday said that he perceived an 'anti-Opposition' wave in the run up to the elections in the State. Addressing a press conference before undertaking his election campaign in north coastal Andhra, he credited the Congress party with the dubious distinction of inviting the 'anti-Opposition' sentiment among voters with its blatant act of 'making business out of politics'.

Roja files papers amid high drama

The last minute nomination of film actress Roja on Wednesday triggered violent protest in the border constituency of Nagari forcing the police to fire five rounds in the air to quell a riotous mob. Violence broke out when supporters of Doraswamy Raju a leading Telugu film producer who was denied ticket in favor of Roja, pelted stones at three vehicles in which the actress arrived at the MRO office at Nagari along with her aides to file her nomination around 3pm.

Two cops hurt in blast

Two constables of the Greyhounds division sustained shrapnel injuries on Wednesday when the PWG naxalites set off four land mines in the agency area on Wednesday. An exchange of fire ensured between the police and naxalites for about half an hour. The injured constables were rushed to the KGH for immediate treatment.

Claymore mine unearthed near Rayachoti

The police on Wednesday unearthed a claymore mine along the Kadiri Rayachoti main road near Bharavagutta in the naxalites affected Rayachoti mandal on information given by local persons about electrical wires spotted on the roadside.

Counting of votes on May 11th and 13th

The counting of votes for the Assembly election will be taken up on May 11 from 8am and for the Lok Sabha election on May 13th also from 8am. Central observers assume charge

126 Central Observers posted to Andhra Pradesh have arrived and assumed charge. They will be camping at the headquarters of the 42 Lok Sabha constituencies two for general purpose and one for expenditure. A senior election official said the complete address of the observers with details relating to the place of their temporary stay and telephone number have been displayed at Lok Sabha/Assembly constituency headquarters.
