Two killed in poll violence

Two persons were killed and many injured in clashes that broke out in several places during the second phase of polling to 147 Assembly segments and 21 Lok Sabha constituencies in Andhra Pradesh on Monday. The authorities estimated the polling percentage at 63 per cent but there way a heavy turnout especially of women in several constituencies. Over one hundred violent incidents some of them involving Ministers and former MLAs were reported from Guntur, Cuddapah and Chittor. Police fired in the air at 13 places to quell violent mobs. In as many as 31 places EVMs were damaged Repolling has been ordered in 65 poling stations.

Clashes rigging mar 2nd phase polls

Widespread violence, booth capturing, rigging and smashing of EVMs marred the second and final phase of poling to 147 Assembly segments and 21 Lok Sabha Constituencies in Andhra Pradesh on Monday leaving two persons killed and dozens injured in clashes between ruling TDP and Congress workers. Repolling has been ordered in 65 polling stations owing to violence etc, The Police opened fire in the air at 13 places to quell violent mobs. The DGP said over 100 violent incidents were reported, the highest in Guntur followed by Cuddapah and Chittor.

VSEZ turnover crosses Rs. 400cr. mark

The Visakhapatnam Special Economic Zone has posted an export turnover of Rs.436 crores during 2003-04 according to official sources. The zone had targeted a turnover of Rs.500 crores for the recently ended fiscal, but fell short of mark as the investments expected during the year were delay and the software exports did not make expected revival.

Relief works in 11 mandals to begin soon

Drought relief works in 11 mandals in the district would begin in the next couple of day and 7000 million tones of rice required for these works was already stored in various FP shops said the Joint Collector speaking to press reporters.

Heavy turnout in Penukonda

An unusually heavy turnout of voters marked the polls in this Assembly constituency, where the TDP candidate Paritala Ravindra was arrested on charges of attempt to murder, use of weapons and abuse in the name of caste. Contrary to fears of extensive violence between rival factions on the eve of elections, polling was by and large peaceful barring a few stray incidents. In view of the repeated pleas of the TDP leaders, fearing attacks from the PWG and the extremist outfit's general poll boycott call, a heavy police bandobust ws seen all over this constituency.

TDP blames Congress for violence

The TDP has attributed violence in the second phase polling to Congress activists going berserk due to the impeding defeat of their party. Whatever be the tactics of Congress, Dharma will prevail over evil and TDP will win the elections according to T.Srinivas Yadav and former MLA told reporters.

In a freak incident, a BSF constable was injured by a stray bullet at Konteru in Yalamanchili Mandal falling under the Narasapur Assembly segment in West Godavari.

YSR thanks people for their support to Congress

The former CLP leader Dr.Y.S.Rajasekharareddy has expressed his whole hearted thanks to all sections of the people of Andhra Pradesh for their overwhelming support. In a statement to the press on Monday, liquor and muscle power could not influence the voters and promised that the Congress would take all steps for the welfare and uplift of weaker sections.
