EAMCET 2003 Counselling begins - Student group activists lathi charged
Hyderabad, 18 July 2003

The Counselling for Engineering and Medical courses offered by various colleges in the state of Andhra Pradesh began today. The counselling began simultaneously from five centers - Hyderabad, Guntur, Visakhapatnam, Warangal and Tirupati

Proceedings of the Counselling got disrupted soon with supporters from ABVP, NSUI, SFI, AISF, AIDSO and other student groups demonstrating against the hike in engineering fees. Police restored to lathi charge to clear the activists. Earlier Technical Education Minister Nerella Anajaneyulu announced the start of the counselling sessions at Sanketika Vidya Bhawan at Masab Tank in Hyderabad. Hundreds of activists were arrested.

Over 100 activists were arrested in Guntur. Many of them were released on personal bail. Counselling in Tirupati and Warangal began with a delay of 2 hours. 12 students joined in hospitals following a lathi charge by police as a move to send them away. 17 activists were remanded.
