32nd National Games 32nd National Games begins at Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam

The Opening Ceremony of the 10-day sporting events was held at the Sri GMC Balayogi Stadium at Gachibowli in Hyderabad. The Stadium was named after the name of the former Lok Sabha Speaker - Sri Balayogi.

Indian President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Governor Dr. C Rangrajan, Union Minister Mr. Vikram Varma, Minister Sri Bandaru Dattatreya, Chief Justice of High Court Justice Lakshmanan, Member of Parliament and President of IOC Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Mr. N Chandrababu Naidu, Film Star Amitab Bachan, Home Minister Devendar Goud, Andhra Pradesh Minister of Sports P Ramulu, AICC Secretary Mr. Valalar Ravi, Members of the Parliament and others attended the inaugural day celebrations of the games.

The program began with the march past of teams from all states of the Indian Republic. A specialty of this years National Games is that the Services sectors also took part as a team. The March past concluded within 45 minutes and was followed by a Tri-color flag formation by balloons by 152 NCC cadets.

Director General of Police, Andhra Pradesh and President of Andhra Pradesh Olympic Association (APOA) Sri HJ Dora asked the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Mr. N Chandrababu Naidu to give welcome address.

The Chief Minister welcomed the dignitaries and sports personalities from round the country and thanked them for their presence at the National Games. He said that increase of book sales on exercises reminded of the increasing importance of sports and fitness. He reminded about the fact that India won only 912 medals at the Sydney Olympics. He said that Andhra Pradesh felt of the need for International level equipment to achieve higher levels. He said that Hyderabad is the city associated with Information Technology and Bio-Technology and now is the center for center for the National Games. He asked every one to have the taste of Hyderabadi Biryani and the precious Pearls.

He asked the Union Government to make import of sporting equipment free. He thanked the Sports Authorities and A P Olympic Association for its help in shaping the best stadiums in record time at the Sports Village at Hyderabad. He said that Andhra Pradesh will be get ready to host Olympics if necessary and asked India to competent for the same.

Kalmadi's welcome speech

Suresh Kalmadi, President - Indian Olympic Association presented a memento to President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. He welcomed one and all to the sports city of Hyderabad and said that there will be 31 Olympic disciplines in which competitions will be held in the 10-day event. He reminded that the sports are to promote National Integration. He thanked the support of the Chief Minister for taking personal interest in almost every important issue despite tight schedules. He promised, on behalf of the IOA, that it will take serious steps to host Olympics in India.

He said that recent increase in the medal tally at the recent Busan Asiad Games is the first sign of positive ness of sports on the Indian front. He predicted that many records will be broken in the current games as the sporting spirit is clearly visible. He also said that Assam will be the venue to the next National games and that a decision to this affect was taken at the General Body meeting. Speaking on the special rules introduced at the current Games, he said that Medal winners and random players will be tested for dope. He later asked Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam to speak and declare the National Games to open

President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was always a good speaker and his speeches are always enthusiastic. His first words were "India can win - India should Win". He said that the dream of India and players at sports was not just to win but was transforming to host Olympics soon. He said that dreams should transform to thoughts and it in turn into action and he expressed his sureness of that this will happen.

He recited a small poem - I now have a dream - dream for action - and dream for performance - sttive for excellence and bring glory to the country

The President's message is loud and clear : If at all in Human life that there is any aspect that can enrich the life - it is sports and games

He felt happy at Andhra Pradesh for providing international quality infrastructure for sports. He asked parents and teachers to encourage their children to play games and actively take part in sports. About 25,000 hours of a student's life in 12 years span is spent in classrooms and that a sporting and games had an unfortunate small share.

Laser bands

With the President declaring the games to be open, the Olympic flag was being carried to the main pole at the stadium and was put near the Indian National Flag and the Andhra Pradesh Olympic Association flag.

Torch Lighting

Athletes from Andhra Pradesh brought the main torch to the stadium. Much suspense surrounded as to who will do the lighting. The Torch was taken round the stadium before the main torch was lit.

The AP Police Band played the Janaganamana.

Oath Taking Ceremony

It is customary that all states take up the oath that they will play games to the fullest spirit in the intended way. The Flag bearers from various states will encircled at the center and Captain of the Andhra Pradesh team Mr. Mukesh Kumar took the oath on behalf of all the sportsmen and sportswomen who were playing in this National Games. Mr. Sudhakar took oath on behalf of technical officials who were officiating in the games.

The Cultural Show

Colorful laser lights and scintillations will be in memories by those who viewed the show. The Cultural shows were the best attractions of the inaugural ceremony and performances by Maestros and dance performances by youngsters and children were exicited with the 'high voltage excitement' was powered with 100,000 W of music speakers were installed at the stadium.

The shows began with a performance by S P Balasubrahmayam and Anuradha Shriram choir group which sang the "Vandemaataram" - the song that reminds of Unity in Diversity.

Unveiling of Veera

This was followed by the unveiling of the "Veera" - Ongole Bull which was the official mascot of the National Games. The Veera represents the spirit of sports with its intelligence, strength, passion, confidence and endurance. As the Veera came to the ground, background slogans calling "Veera… Veera…" amidst digital music enthused the crowds. The Veera welcomed every one in the stadium.

Later a documentary on the big screen installed at the stadium by Amitab Bachhan raised more interest among the spectators on National games. Mr. Bachan himself cames to the center stage and addressed the visitors to Hyderabad with his sparkling voice.

Sukhvinder Singh representing the Northern India sang many melodious tunes as children and teenagers in Punjabi attire performed the dances.

Singer Usha Uthup representing the East, Ila Arun representing Gujarat and Rajasthan, Remo Fernandez representing the West, Subhamani, Vinayak (ghat) and Ganesh Selvam representing the South have performed at the inaugural ceremony of the games.

Badminton
The Andhra Pradesh team won two Gold medals in Badminton events.In the Men's Andhra Pradesh defeated Kerala 3-1 and in the Women's Final the the host beat Maharashtra 2-1. The Women team has made this achievement for the third time in a row. The Andhra Coach S.M. Arif expressed his happiness at the team's victory.

Hockey
Chandigarh won over Orissa 3-2 in Women's Hockey event at Begumpet Police Stadium. Prakash Chaudary made the three goals in the 17th, 21st and 26th minutes. Maharashtra managed a 5-1 win over Delhi.

Volley Ball
Andhra Pradesh won over Maharashtra while Bengal beat Karnataka in Women's Volley Ball Tournament held at Kotla Vijaya Bhaskara Indoor Stadium. Tamil Nadu on the other hand, won over Chandigarh and Kerala over Punjab.

Football
Goa won over Maharashtra 2-0 and Services and Bengal managed a 1-1 draw at the Men's Football competition held at Lal Bahadur Stadium.

Gymnastics
The Saroornagar Indoor Stadium was artistic with women's Gymnastics events. The Gold Medal was taken by the West Bengal team with 152.75 pts, Andhra Pradesh with 147.15 bagged the Silver. Punjab got a bronze medal.

Judo

Punjab gets 5 golds in Judo events. Andhra Pradesh finished with 3 bronze medals.
