32nd National Games Hockey

Punjab has won the Gold Medal in Hockey beating the Pillai’s Punjab team 3-1. In Women’s Hockey, Haryana won over Jharkand 4-0.

Boxing
The Andhra Boxers won 4 gold medals at the National Games in Hyderabad. H. Srinivas, V. Hari Krishnan, Bhagyarajan and R.L. Jenny won gold medals for the Andhra team.

Wrestling

Andhra Pradesh has won 3 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medals at the Saroornagar Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad. Punjab and Haryana won team championships in men and women category respectively. Haryana stood first in the Greek-o-Roman category while Andhra Pradesh came third.

Cannoing

In the Cannoing at National Games, Andhra Pradesh won another gold and 3 silver medals. Sanjeet Singh won a Gold medal in the 200 mts. Cannoing Singles category held at Hussain Sagar. In the Doubles event Kerala won a gold medal, Punjab won a silver and the Services won a bronze.

Pistol Shooting

Andhra Pradesh won a Gold in the Pistol Shooting event at the National Games. Samaresh Jang (Andhra Pradesh) won a gold in the 50 m. event held at the Central University. Amith Kumar (Rajasthan) and Kamal Singh won Silver and Bronze medals respectively. In the team event, Services became the overall champion with 1621 points and won the Gold medal. Rajasthan and Uttaranchal won Silver and Bronze respectively.

Soccer

Defending Champion Punjab won over Bengal 2-1 in the finals at Lal Bahadur Stadium. Gurvinder Singh scored the Golden goal and won the Gold for Punjab. Tamil Nadu won the bronze medal. Manipur won over Bengal 1-0 in the women’s finals.

Table Tennis

Saurabh Chakarvarthy won Gold medal in Table tennis event of the National Games. In the Finals Saurabh beat Soumyadeep Roy 4-3.

Basketball

Chattisgarh won over Andhra Pradesh 80-72 in the finals of the women’s Basketball. Services won over Karnataka 71-49 and won the bronze medal.

Congress Party President Ms. Sonia Gandhi visited Warangal. Addressing a large gathering, she strongly criticized the State Government for its poor performance. Ms. Sonia said that the Government could not fulfill its promises that were made before the elections.

The Royal Bengal tiger Kiran died in the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park in Visakhapatnam. It has been found out the tiger died because of Kidney problem in the Post-mortem repot.

The Minister for Forests Mr. Ch.Ayyana Patrudu said that Chief Minister has agreed to organize sports at International level in Visakhapatnam in the next two years. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the National Games in Visakhapatnam, he said Asia Youth Volleyball championship in 2003, Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in 2003-04, World Speed Skating Competitions in 2004 will be held in the state in the future. He praised the services of Volunteers.
