Elections for various Municipalities on Jan 22, 2002

The Elections for Municipalities in Hyderabad, Tirupati, Hindupur, Gaddiannaram and Markapur were scheduled to be held on January 22, 2002. The State Election Commissioner, Mr. K Madhavara Rao stated this in a press release in Hyderabad. He said that Code of Conduct will come into effect immediately and that the Janmabhoomi Programme will be suspended in these areas temporarily. The election notice will be issued by the Returning Officers on December 29 and that the nominations will be received between December 29 and January 5. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is January 9.

27 Naxals surrender
As many as 27 Naxals surrendered before the DIG of Police, Mr. H K Dora on Wednesday. Most of the Naxals who surrendered belong to the District Committee Members of Maad Division of the People's War Group.

More AIDS Counselling Centers - says CM
Chief Minister Mr. N Chandrababu Naidu said that the Government is going to open AIDS Testing and Counseling Centers all over the state to create better awareness among the public on AIDS. He announced this in the Assembly and said that the existing 26 centers were inadequate.

5 pilgrims of Lord Ayyappa died in a road accident at Bhootpur villege on the National Highway 7 in Mahabubnagar. The accident occurred when the Tata Sumo in which they were traveling was hit by a lorry.

Home Minister Mr. Devendar Goud inaugurated the Technology Block at the Police Commissionerate which will be constructed at a cost of Rs. 55 Lakhs. Commissioner of Police Mr. A K Khan, MP of Visakhapatnam, Mr. MVVS Murthy were also present at the function.

Two Wolves died at the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park due to a lung infection. With this the remaining number of wolves in the park came down to 4.
