CLAREMONT, Calif., March 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Claremont McKenna College today announced a campaign to raise $600 million by 2012, the largest campaign ever initiated by a liberal arts institution. "This is an historic campaign launching in the tradition of Claremont McKenna College-boldly and with impact," said President Pamela B. Gann.

The campaign kicked off today in Los Angeles at the Skirball Center, followed over the next four days with events in Washington, D.C., New York, Chicago, Seattle, Silicon Valley, San Francisco, and San Diego. Additional events will take place in Singapore and Hong Kong later this month, London in May, and additional U.S. cities this fall.

The Campaign for Claremont McKenna calls for commitments in five priorities:

-- $110 million for students: need-based financial aid and merit
scholarships, internships, research, speaker series, and other
       experiences
-- $110 million for faculty: chairs, research, and new curricula
-- $100 million for facilities: new buildings, renovations, and master
       planning projects
-- $200 million for the Robert Day Scholars Program
-- $80 million for The Fund for CMC: operating costs

Gifts already totaling $425 million include the largest donation ever received by a liberal arts college: Alumnus, Trustee, and Honorary Campaign Co-Chair Robert Day, chairman of the Trust Company of the West, provided a visionary gift of $200 million for the Robert Day Scholars Program, a unique undergraduate and graduate finance program that combines a rigorous curriculum with a rich co-curricular component.

In addition to Day, Honorary Co-Chairs include alumni Henry R. Kravis and George Roberts, co-founders of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., and President Emeritus Jack L. Stark.

Co-chairs of the Campaign for Claremont McKenna are alumni and Trustees E. David Hetz and Thomas M. Mitchell. The Steering Committee includes alumni, parents, and Trustees Peter K. Barker, retired Partner, Goldman Sachs & Co.; Harry T. McMahon, Vice Chairman, Merrill Lynch & Co.; Gary E. Biszantz, President and Owner, Cobra Farms; A. Steven Crown, General Partner, Henry Crown and Co.; Laura M. Grisolano, President of the CMC Alumni Association; Thomas C. Leppert, Mayor of Dallas; David G. Mgrublian, CEO and Partner, IDS Real Estate; and Kenneth M. Novack, Chairman, Schnitzer Steel. President Gann; Trustee Barbara J. Wallace Boswell; and alumnus and parent Jeffrey S.
