Jaman Honors Earth Day With World Documentaries

SAN MATEO, Calif., April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- In honor of Earth Day (April 22), Jaman.com the leading online destination for quality international and independent entertainment, highlights an exciting collection of films reflecting the state of the earth today.

"We cannot underestimate the power of film to inspire us and transform the world," said Jaman CEO Gaurav Dhillon. "Jaman's catalog of movies from around the world includes quality features, shorts and documentaries, which inspire as they entertain."

Visit Jaman.com to view two free films. Choose from these earth-aware documentaries, as well as a large collection of provocative feature and documentary titles:

OIL ON ICE -- An Amnesty International endorsed film. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is where America's conscience and its greed will have their crucial showdown. This thorough and passionately made documentary looks at the many angles involved in the U.S. government's push to drill for oil in ANWR -- the impact it will have on wildlife, on the local Gwich'in people, and, beyond that, its implications on global warming, and America's energy and transportation policies.

THE CHARCOAL PEOPLE -- The flip-side of globalization brought into vivid relief. For $2 a day, entire families of migrant workers slash-and-burn the Brazilian rainforest to make charcoal used by the automobile industry. This UNICEF-championed documentary explores the everyday realities of these laborers and the environmental toll that profit-minded economics is taking on the besieged Amazon.

CHERNOBYL 20 -- This film chronicles filmmaker Yelena Zmushko's personal search for the truth behind Chernobyl's nuclear disaster in 1986. 20 years after surviving the horrific event, Zmushko returns to Belarus to find that Chernobyl is still shrouded in secrecy. The far-reaching effects of the radioactive exposure are revealed through interviews with experts and current residents, but perhaps most remarkably is that Zmushko captures the human instinct to survive which fully depends on the ability to hope.

FROM DUST -- Tribeca and Dubai Film Festival. Dhruv Dhavan's sharp-eyed and vigilant documentary focuses on the plight of survivors of the 2004 Asian tsunami, residing along Sri Lanka's coast and rendered homeless. We witness a fisherman and a businessman, both trying to re-build their homes but blocked by absurd government restrictions on new beach-front construction. Meanwhile, an Australian aid worker expresses his frustration with the authorities who've stonewalled relief efforts. The reasons for this uproar will shock you, and point to the sometimes profit-obsessed and perverted side of globalization.

THE HEMP REVOLUTION -- Features top scientists, academics and professionals from around the world on the amazing and little known story of the hemp plant. Hemp, probably the first plant to ever be cultivated, was among the world's largest agricultural crops until the late 1800's. This feature length documentary explores the plants fascinating history, it's thousands of uses, the economic and cultural forces behind its prohibition, and it's modern potential to solve major environmental problems.

In addition to the above movies, Jaman has a prestigious film collection of American independent and international films built in partnership with premier libraries such as Trust Film, Fortissimo Film, Celluloid Dreams, Fortune Star, Celestial Films and Vanguard. Works from some of the world's newest and brightest filmmakers are now available for download online:

-- Migration, a dramatic short by acclaimed Indian filmmaker Mira Nair of
Monsoon Wedding and The Namesake fame. Funded by the Bill and Melinda
Gates Foundation, Migration is part of collection of rich mini movies
that aim to dismantle myths and raise awareness about HIV/AIDS.
-- Inside Iraq: The Untold Story, a gutsy, eye-opening expose of Iraq
    -- Kore-Eda Hirokazu's Afterlife (Cannes/Sundance/Toronto)
-- Dardennes Brothers' La Promesse (Cannes/Toronto)
    -- India's Oscar entry Paheli
