Video: David Carradine: 'I get it all in the first take'

Tough-guy stuntmen beware: David Carradine can still kick your butt.

LOS ANGELES, March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Veteran actor and martial-arts guru David Carradine has seen it all in his career, and has the scars to prove it. In the following item, available for all press uses, Carradine discusses the enjoyable time he had in China filming and doing stunts in "Son of the Dragon," a four-hour film that will launch the new Hallmark Movie Channel HD on April 2.

After almost four decades of kicking and punching his way through Hollywood, the veteran actor and martial arts legend drew on his limitless experience while in China to film the Hallmark Original Movie Event "Son of the Dragon," which premieres as the first program to launch the Hallmark Movie Channel HD on Wednesday, April 2. While there, he availed himself of the opportunity to teach his younger opponents a thing or two about just how it's done.

"The others rehearsed the fights until they had it cold, but I'm a quick study," Carradine says. "Sure, I worked with the choreographer a little, but fights, swords, stunts ... I've done it all thousands of times. The biggest preparation for me was learning my lines.

"After 35 years, I kind of have it all down!"

In "Son of the Dragon," Carradine, most famous for his roles in "Kung Fu" and "Kung Fu: The Legend Continues," stars as Bird, a wise and spiritual former sword master who is a mentor to DB, a young thief played by John Reardon (recently of Sci Fi's "Painkiller Jane"), and a father figure to a group of street orphans. Having played the hero so many times, Carradine has no problem continuing the pattern.

"It's more fun to play the good guy because they tend to be the focal point of the story, and I enjoy being the center of attention," Carradine laughs. "Bird is a spiritual and funny guy who is a master of several disciplines of combat. This is a great role in a big, exciting film."

Of course, as with all that combat work, accidents will happen, but Carradine approaches it all in true Zen fashion. "They say 'the show must go on!' and I've 'gone on' with my share of injuries over the last 50 years," he says. "Broken hands, separated ribs, double pneumonia, busted ligaments ... I've had it all. I sliced my foot open during 'Son of the Dragon,' but what's a little cut?

"I say 'just get on with it!' Grab a band-aid and let the lawyers worry about the insurance. Learn it at lunch, shoot it in the afternoon, be home in time for dinner. That's the Carradine philosophy."

"Son of the Dragon" a Hallmark Movie Channel Original Movie Event, stars David Carradine, John Reardon, Rupert Graves and Desiree Siahaan and airs Wednesday, April 2 (8/7c) and Thursday, April 3 (8/7c) launching the new Hallmark Movie Channel HD.
