FAA to Use Sensis Surface Management Technology to Improve Operations at JFK

Sensis Aerobahn Service Enables FAA to Observe Ground Operations at JFK

EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Sensis Corporation has been awarded a contract by the Department of Transportation John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center to provide its Aerobahn(R) Service to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). The FAA will use the web-based Aerobahn Service for monitoring and measuring surface operations at JFK to address potential changes to airport operations that would ease congestion and flight delays.

Sensis Aerobahn combines airline flight schedule and corresponding operational information with ground surveillance data from the airport's surface surveillance system to provide a real-time, highly accurate view of surface operations. At JFK, the FAA's Airport Surface Detection Equipment, Model X (ASDE-X) system provides real-time aircraft position data to Aerobahn. FAA Aerobahn users will be able to view airport surface operations in real-time, as well as playback events, to better understand the effectiveness of existing policies and procedures.

"At JFK, Aerobahn leverages the surveillance data from the ASDE-X system to provide the situational awareness needed to fully observe and measure, in real time, the performance of airport surface operations and its impact on the national airspace system," said Tony Lo Brutto, Vice President and General Manager of Sensis Air Traffic Systems. "The FAA will use the real-time situational awareness at the airport to identify new policies and procedures that could be implemented at the airport to improve taxi times, save fuel and reduce emissions at one of the nation's busiest airports."

FAA users will have access to the following specialized Aerobahn tools:

-- TaxiView - Providing a real-time situational display of aircraft taxiing
on the surface. TaxiView enables users to observe departure queues,
view actual arrival demand, and contrast that demand with availability
of gates for the arrival aircraft.
-- OpsView - Delivering robust real-time and historical information for
analysis and reporting. OpsView enables users to review operational
events and identify trends, with the goal of mitigating the impact of
        future occurrences.
-- QuickView - Providing a quick and accurate assessment of airfield
operations, for example real-time status of arriving and departing
flights. QuickView's alerting function delivers a visual alert
when configured performance thresholds, such as taxi in or taxi out
times, are met or exceeded by particular aircraft to proactively manage
        ground operations.

Sensis Aerobahn is operational in North America, Europe and Asia, providing airlines and airports with visibility into the status of critical airside operations. Aerobahn customers include Continental Airlines at Houston Intercontinental and Newark Liberty International Airports; Northwest Airlines at Detroit Metro and Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airports; Fraport for Frankfurt Airport; Service de la Navigation Aerienne for Paris Orly and Charles de Gaulle Airports; and the Civil Aviation Department for Hong Kong International Airport.
