Update: Xtreme Everest Takes SunTech Medical OEM NIBP to the Top of the World

Morrisville, North Carolina, United States

The Caudwell Xtreme Everest Team has returned from their expedition to the peak of Mount Everest and has begun reviewing data collected at extreme altitudes in hopes to improve treatment for intensive care patients.

SunTech Medical, in co-operation with Cortex Biophysik GmbH, provided the Caudwell Xtreme Everest team with non-invasive blood pressure (OEM NIBP) technology for measuring blood pressure during extreme exercise at a series of high-altitude laboratories. The team hoped to replicate the low oxygen levels that intensive care patients encounter with the similarly low oxygen levels on Mount Everest. They believe their findings may help improve patient care for a number of life-threatening conditions.

The Xtreme Everest team performed tests during exercise that included assessment with the MetaLyzer(R) cardiopulmonary exercise system from Cortex. SunTech Medical provides OEM non-invasive blood pressure technology (OEM NIBP) for the MetaLyzer system to accurately and reliably obtain blood pressure measurements under the demanding conditions of stress and exercise.

"We used the SunTech non-invasive blood pressure (OEM NIBP) system on the Caudwell Xtreme Everest Expedition. The system performed very well in extremely harsh environmental conditions in temperatures as low as -25 degrees Celsius and at altitudes of up to 6400 metres. We successfully carried out 1787 exercise tests with NIBP monitoring without damaging any of the systems," says Denny Levett, Deputy Research Leader Caudwell Xtreme Everest.

Many of these tests had never before been done at these altitudes and should provide the team with more information about oxygen supply to the brain under conditions of low blood oxygen levels. The results are expected to help physicians understand how patients react to low oxygen levels and lead to improved care for the critically ill. SunTech Medical certainly supports this goal and is proud that Cortex Biophysik and the Caudwell Xtreme Everest Team chose SunTech Medical as their blood pressure solution in pursuit of that goal.

Caudwell Xtreme Everest Project is coordinated by the UCL Center for Altitude, Space and Extreme environment medicine (CASE). For more information, please visit www.xtreme-everest.co.uk.
