Redback Networks to Unveil Smart Metro Ethernet Strategy at Carrier Ethernet World

San Jose, California, United States

Redback Networks Inc., an Ericsson company that makes video-centric routers for 75 percent of the world's largest triple-play networks, today announced it will unveil its Smart Metro Ethernet strategy for video + mobility upgrades at Carrier Ethernet World Congress, in Geneva, Switzerland, September 24-28.

Redback Will Discuss Its Network Transformation Strategy

Redback will discuss its multi-phase network transformation strategy during a 30-minute presentation at Carrier Ethernet World Congress, Thursday, September 27. Redback also will showcase its award-winning SmartEdge(R) family of router products at its booth with parent company Ericsson, the #1 market leader in telecom infrastructure. In addition, Redback and Ericsson will make announcements that reinforce their carrier Ethernet strategy to provide a rich service mix of centralized and distributed network applications over a full service broadband architecture.

"Video and mobility are driving a $9.8 billion upgrade market, which represents the largest network upgrade opportunity since the Internet was invented," said Arpit Joshipura, vice president of marketing, standards and solutions at Redback Networks. "A Smart metro Ethernet network for data, voice, video and mobility services will reduce network costs up to 50 percent and give carriers more flexibility to introduce new services over time."

Major Split About Network Futures: Is Your Vendor a Divider or Unifier?

There is a major industry split about the future of network upgrades. "Is your network vendor a divider or unifier?" said Joshipura. "The Network 1.0 camp continues to push separate networks and devices for separate services. These vendors use less-intelligent routers and switches that divide, rather than manage data, voice and video services. The Network 2.0 camp offers a better alternative: A single Internet infrastructure that will unify residential, business and mobile services. More than 40 percent of Top 20 carriers use Redback gear for both residential and business services. Mobile carriers also make this shift. Carriers need to be focused on a future, where fixed and mobile networks will be connected and all communications will be unified under a smart, full service broadband architecture."

Top carriers deploying Redback for data, voice and video services over residential and business networks include AT&T, British Telecom, China Telecom, China Netcom, ChungHwa Telecom (Taiwan), eAccess (Japan), France Telecom, Korea Telecom, Telefonica, and Turk Telecom, among the more than 200 carriers worldwide.

Managing More Broadband Subscribers for EMEA Carriers

In greater Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Redback manages 22+ million broadband subscribers today, including 7+ million in France, 5.5+ million in the United Kingdom, 3.5+ million in Germany, 3+ million in Turkey, 1+ million in Belgium and 1+ Million in Israel. Across EMEA, Redback routers help telephone carriers manage a variety of data, voice and video services, also known as triple-play services. Typical network applications managed by SmartEdge routers in EMEA include broadband access (e.g. high-speed Internet service), edge routing (e.g. VoIP service) and Ethernet aggregation (e.g. TV and other video services).
