London, United Kingdom
Sir Alex Ferguson kicked off inter-dealer broker BGC's 3rd Annual Charity Day this morning to help raise funds for a number of charities including the Society for Multiple Sclerosis which he represented.
Sir Alex helped to complete a number of deals on the BGC trading floor. "The work BGC has been doing for the last two or three years is quite phenomenal. I admire that. But I am also here representing the Society for Multiple Sclerosis....I think that's a good cause. So that's basically why I'm here," he said.
The BGC Charity Day, which is held every year on September 11th to commemorate those lost in the world trade centre tragedy, has raised a total of USD 9 million for good causes over the last two years from the donation of its trading revenues from the day.
Commenting on the events of September 11th 2001, Sir Alex said, "I was travelling to Athens with the team at the time. My son was in the world Trade Center the day before - he worked for Goldman Sachs at the time. So when we arrived in Athens, I turned my phone on and my daughter-in-law phoned me and said 'Mark's okay...he's in Washington'. Of course when I went to the telly and saw the scenes, it was out of this world. You just couldn't understand it..."
Remarking on Manchester United's start to the season, Sir Alex said, "Well, I think we're slow to start, but that's not been unusual for us if you look at our history. Last year we got off the blocks straight away and won the League well. This year we've got a bit of ground to make up, but saying that we've got players coming back and I'm quite positive."
Commenting on the fitness of Wayne Rooney, Sir Alex revealed that his star striker is making good progress, "Well, he started training yesterday. He's doing some positive running, so hopefully that will bring him on a good bit. Obviously it's early days and we just have to see how he progresses through the training."
Further guests will be joining throughout the day including Joe Calzaghe, Amir Khan, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Frankie Dettori and Sir Steve Redgrave. A full list is attached.
