PCCW of Hong Kong Selects Redback Networks to Upgrade its Video-on-Demand & Broadband Infrastructure

Beijing, China

Redback Networks Inc., an Ericsson company that makes video-centric routers for 75 percent of the world's largest triple-play networks, today announced that PCCW Ltd. of Hong Kong has chosen the SmartEdge multi-service edge router platform to help deliver video-on-demand and other broadband services.

PCCW is the largest IPTV service provider in the world, serving more than 800,000 subscribers. It is also one of the largest broadband carriers in China with more than 1 million customers. The addition of PCCW as a carrier customer puts Redback at the center of more than 50 percent of the largest IPTV deployments in world. Other Redback customers deploying IPTV and broadband video services include AT&T, Belgacom, China Telecom, China Netcom, ChungHwa Telekom, Korea Telecom, KPN, Neuf Cegetel, among others.

"By selecting Redback to upgrade its network for video-on-demand and other broadband services, PCCW is choosing a next generation broadband infrastructure that will make it much easier to combine data, voice, video and mobility services over time," said Herve Brunet, vice president of sales and operations in Asia at Redback Networks.

After an extensive review, Redback was chosen because its routers give PCCW greater flexibility to deliver video and other broadband services with higher levels of reliability and quality of service. Redback's router platform for data, voice and video services also will allow PCCW to save significantly in network operation costs, using Redback's award-winning NetOP policy management software.

Redback manages 15+ million of the 35 million broadband subscribers in China, about 43 percent of the entire market for triple-play services in China. Redback has deployed its SmartEdge router platform with the top provincial telephone carriers in 22 of 32 Chinese provinces. For China Telecom, this includes provincial carriers in Guangdong, Zhejiang, Fujian, Anhui, Hubei, Jiangxi, Yunnan, Shaanxi, Ningxia, Heilongjiang and Tibet. For China Netcom, this includes similar deployments in Shandong, Liaoning, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Jilin, Henan, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Zhejiang, Chongqing and Yunnan.
