In a remarkable interfaith gesture, Unity Church of Today of Minden honored the prominent Hindu chaplain Rajan Zed.
Zed was presented a commendation certificate by the Minister, Larry Schneider, for the work Zed has done to bring various communities together through interfaith dialogue in northwestern Nevada and adjoining California.
Rajan Zed read the first Hindu prayer of United States Senate in Washington DC, California State Senate, Nevada State Senate and Nevada State Assembly in the past few months and is very active in interfaith dialogue in the region.
Schneider, in his welcoming address, listed Zed's various community activities and said that peace lied at the heart of all religions. Despite their philosophical differences, all faith traditions had similar objective and that dialogue brought us mutual enrichment, he added.
Zed said that one had to act for the benefit of all. Despite our seriously different traditions, we should learn to live in some sort of trust and mutual loyalty. God, as a sign of God's bountifulness and generosity, positively willed the existence of different faiths, he added.
Both Schneider and Zed listed various similarities in their traditions and agreed that in our shared quest for truth we could learn from each other and thus come closer to the truth and cooperate in common causes.
Unity, headquartered in Unity Village, Missouri, began in 1886 when Charles Fillmore and his wife Myrtle discovered a way of life based on affirmative prayer. Unity is described as "positive, practical Christianity" which teaches "effective, daily application of the principles of Truth taught and exemplified by Jesus Christ." The Bible is the Unity's basic textbook and currently there are over 900 unity churches.
Oldest and third largest religion in the world, Hinduism dates back to around 3,000 BCE. It has no founder, no datable beginning, and no single holy book. Hindus believe what is commonly considered to be reality-the physical world-is actually temporal and illusory. The goal of existence is liberation from the cycle of birth and rebirth and entrance into the indescribable state of moksha (liberation). There are about 781 million Hindus in the world.
Mission of Unity Church of Today of Minden is to awaken, acknowledge, and nurture the Christ spirit in everyone. It is dedicated to prayer, meditation and living a God centered life, according to Larry Schneider.
